Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
